It seems that what American people want for their nation is the same with that of people in the past. They tend to think they have a special duty to the world like embodiment of peace and an advance of mankind. So they always try to make that come true and have a proud of that. At the first time there were problems that any place where people are present has. Therefore they try to solve them. However other problems rise and the problems affect to future. Hawthorne noticed and felt something wrong about that.
2. Effects Given by a Framing Story
In the early 17 century, New England is a strict puritan society. At that time, American had dream of an ideal society and concern about a possibility to fail. So they repressed what is different from them such as Indian and Hester. It was a kind of promise. Seeing a text, the scarlet letter, we can see people of the town had a solemn atmosphere for judgment about a sinner or a criminal. It is because repression to someone who is different from them is their silent contract.
