Many people see movies as simple escapist entertainment with little redeeming value. However, movies reveal a lot about a society. By viewing them, people learn about a country's values and social structure.
First of all, movies give insight into what values are important to a country. Characters' actions show clearly what societies esteem and what they look down upon. For example, in Korea, family relations are very important. As a result, Korea heroes will sacrifice themselves in order to help other members of their clan. On the other hand, villains will be portrayed negatively as having too much personal ambition. In contrast, heroes in American cinema are often individualistic lone crusaders who succeed in realizing their own dreams. These films conversely depict weaker characters as lacking independence. Movies thus show very clearly what values society hold dear.
In addition, movies reveal the social structure of a country. This is because they portray gender, class, and race relations. For instance, movies form India show arranged marriage, a majority of women as housewives, and a very pronounced class hierarchy among different castes and tribes. Contrastingly, Swedish films often show love marriages, women working outside the home, and a more egalitarian class society. In addition, the films show a predominately white society. Therefore, watching movies from these cultures gives viewers an idea about how these societies are organized. In other words, one can understand the different social relationships through countries' films.
Since movies mirror the country's values and social structure, they are a great way to learn about other places from the comfort of one's home. Few people have the opportunity to travel around the world, so in order for people to become better versed on the values and social structures of different cultures, they should watch
foreign films. This method of global enrichment is both educational and enjoyable.
