Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country located in South Asia while overlapping with East Asia. It is bored by Tibet and China to the north and India to the south, east and west. The modern Nepal was created in the later half of the 18th century. It originally started off as a monarchy, King being the center of the political system. However, in 1846 Rana family gained power and in result Nepal was under a centralized autocracy for decades. The regime reduced the power of the monarch to a mere figurehead.
About a century later in 1950, there was an armed revolt against the Rana administration. The Shah family came into power and eventually this led to the first appointment of a non-Rana as a prime minister. Hereafter a period of quasi-constitutional rule followed. During the 1950s, there was a movement towards a establishment of a representative form of government, following the British model. In early 1959 Nepal had a new constitution as well as the first democracy elections for a national assembly. However, the King at that time Mahendra declared a parliamentary democracy a failure after 18 months of its installation and dimissed the government. He promulgated a new constitution in December of 1962 which supported a “partyless” system of panchayats (councils).
