Chapter 1 Introduction
Background and purpose of present study
South Korea and China have enjoyed mutual association of a long history. Two neighboring countries not only resemble each other in traditional culture, but also are complementary in various aspects, such as natural resources, human resources and industrial structure.
Since the official establishment of diplomatic relations between PRC and ROK (Republic of Korea) on August 24th, 1992, both countries have endeavored to keep the ties on the track of rapid development in various fields. In economic cooperation, China and South Korea have become important trade partners. As for the political dialogue, we have deepened our mutual understanding and trust through exchanges of visits of top governmental officials and meetings in international multilateral events. Bilateral ties have also resulted in fruitful achievements in the fields of culture, education, technology and so on. We have also expanded our cooperation and improved coordination in regional and international affairs.
After the establishment of diplomatic relations, various trade agreement and investment protective treaty have been signed between two countries, so that the bilateral trade cooperation will be guaranteed steady, healthy and rapid development. Although starting late, bilateral economic cooperation has enjoyed rapid development and large potential. By the year 2003, China has become the largest export and investment destination country, second largest trade partner, and the third largest import source country.
